If you’re thinking about playing WARDOGS on Steam Deck, let me save you some frustration: this is not one of those games where you install it, press Play, leave everything on High, and magically get a perfect handheld experience.

WARDOGS is doing a ridiculous amount of work at once. You have huge 100-player battles, vehicles, destructible buildings, logistics, base construction, voice chat, explosions, and an Unreal Engine 5 environment trying to keep all of it moving. On a desktop PC, that can already be demanding. On a 15W Steam Deck, it’s a serious stress test.

But after spending time looking at the settings and the way the game behaves in different situations, I think WARDOGS is much more playable on Steam Deck than the first ugly frame-rate numbers might suggest.

The trick is not chasing a locked 60 FPS. That’s the wrong goal.

For me, the sweet spot is a 40–45 FPS target with aggressive settings cuts in the areas that actually hurt performance, while keeping textures and important visibility options higher. You still get the feeling of a giant battlefield without turning the entire game into a blurry potato simulator.

And yes, there will be moments when the Deck gets absolutely hammered.

That’s just WARDOGS.

The Real Problem: WARDOGS Is Not Just a GPU Test

One thing that becomes obvious very quickly is that not every frame-rate drop is caused by graphics quality.

The Steam Deck’s CPU has to deal with an enormous amount of game-state information. Think about what is happening during a major objective:

  • Dozens of players moving and fighting.
  • Vehicles driving through the area.
  • Buildings being constructed or destroyed.
  • Physics calculations.
  • Network synchronization.
  • Voice communication.
  • Explosions, smoke and particles.
  • AI and environmental systems running in the background.

That is a lot of work for a four-core Zen 2 CPU.

So lowering every graphical option doesn’t magically solve everything. You can make WARDOGS look like a 2005 shooter and still experience dips when half the server decides to attack the same town.

This is why I would approach Steam Deck optimization differently from a typical PC graphics guide.

You want to remove unnecessary GPU workload without sacrificing the things that help you actually play the game.

My Steam Deck Settings for WARDOGS

Here is the setup I would start with. You can obviously adjust it depending on whether you prefer image quality or frame rate.

Why Keep Textures High?

This is probably the setting I would be most reluctant to reduce.

There is a temptation when optimizing a Steam Deck game to simply put everything on Low. I don’t think that’s the best approach here.

Textures aren’t necessarily the biggest problem when your real enemy is CPU load or expensive effects. Meanwhile, low textures can make a first-person shooter look significantly worse, particularly when you’re trying to identify uniforms, weapons, buildings and other objects at medium distances.

I would rather sacrifice fancy shadows than make every wall and weapon look like wet cardboard.

That’s especially true on the Steam Deck’s relatively small screen.

FSR 3 Is Your Friend

If WARDOGS offers you a choice between rendering everything natively and using an effective temporal upscaler, I’d take the upscaler every time on Steam Deck.

Running 1280×800 sounds easy on paper, but Unreal Engine 5 isn’t exactly famous for being lightweight.

I’d start with FSR 3 Balanced.

If the image looks too soft, try Quality. If you’re getting crushed in major battles, move down to Performance.

There’s no shame in using Performance mode here. I’d rather have a slightly softer image and a playable firefight than beautiful foliage at 22 FPS.

The sharpness slider is also worth experimenting with. Something around 0.35–0.50 is a reasonable starting point, although this is one of those settings where personal preference matters more than benchmarks.

The “Potato” Settings Are Actually Useful

I usually dislike ultra-low presets because developers sometimes use “Potato” as an excuse to make a game look awful.

In WARDOGS, however, the low-end options make more sense because the game has so many expensive systems running simultaneously.

Shadows are the first thing I’d sacrifice.

High-quality dynamic shadows look great, but when a tank is firing into a destructible building while 30 players are shooting around you, I don’t care whether the rubble has Hollywood-quality lighting.

The same goes for:

  • Post-processing
  • Particle effects
  • Bloom
  • Lens flare
  • Depth of field
  • Expensive shading effects

Those are exactly the kinds of visual features I want to remove when chasing a stable handheld experience.

What About the Steam Deck’s UMA/VRAM Setting?

This is one area where I’d be a little more cautious than some community optimization guides.

You may see recommendations to manually set the Steam Deck’s UMA Frame Buffer to 4GB through the BIOS.

It can be worth experimenting with for particular games, especially if you’re dealing with unusual memory behavior, but I wouldn’t treat it as a magical “more VRAM = more FPS” button.

The Steam Deck uses unified memory, meaning the CPU and GPU share the system’s memory pool. Increasing the reserved UMA buffer does not simply give the GPU another 3GB of free performance.

So if you try the 4GB setting, benchmark it yourself rather than assuming it’s automatically better.

If WARDOGS performs exactly the same, or worse, return to the default configuration.

That’s one of the biggest lessons with Steam Deck tweaking: there are a lot of optimization tricks online that sound scientific but aren’t necessarily universal.

I Wouldn’t Go Crazy With TDP Tweaks

WARDOGS is one of those games where I would leave the Deck’s power budget alone.

The CPU is already under serious pressure in large battles, so artificially limiting the system’s power can potentially make those CPU-heavy moments even worse.

I’d rather let the Deck use its normal power envelope and control the experience through the game’s graphics settings.

For a target, 40 FPS is arguably the safer choice, while 45 FPS is the more ambitious setting.

If your particular unit can maintain 45 FPS most of the time, great.

If you’re constantly bouncing between 30 and 45, I’d rather lock the game lower and get more consistent frame pacing.

Consistency beats a higher number on the performance overlay.

My Biggest Tip: Don’t Chase 60 FPS

This is where I think a lot of Steam Deck discussions go wrong.

WARDOGS is not a lightweight competitive shooter designed around running at 144 FPS on a toaster.

It is a massive multiplayer battlefield.

Even if your GPU settings are perfect, there will be situations where the CPU becomes overwhelmed. A massive objective with tanks, infantry, destruction and explosions can push the hardware far harder than an empty stretch of countryside.

So I’d think about performance in three different scenarios.

These aren’t numbers I’d consider guaranteed for every Steam Deck or every future build. Early Access games change constantly, and server populations and map locations can have a huge effect.

But they illustrate the important point: WARDOGS can feel good until the battlefield gets completely insane.

And honestly, that’s kind of appropriate.

Proton: Keep It Simple First

WARDOGS’ anti-cheat and Linux compatibility are another part of the equation.

If you’re experiencing black screens, failed launches or getting kicked when trying to enter multiplayer, don’t immediately start installing ten different community tweaks.

First, make sure the necessary Proton Easy Anti-Cheat Runtime components are installed and that your Proton configuration is sensible.

I’d begin with Proton Experimental or a currently recommended stable Proton release and see how the game behaves before experimenting further.

Also verify the game files if something suddenly breaks after an update.

Early Access games can change their executable, shaders, anti-cheat components and rendering pipeline between patches. A configuration that worked perfectly last week can become useless after one update.

That’s not necessarily a Steam Deck problem.

That’s Early Access.

Don’t Ignore the Controls

There is another reason I think WARDOGS could work surprisingly well on Deck: the controls.

A huge multiplayer tactical shooter can feel awkward with traditional gamepad controls, especially when you’re competing against mouse users.

This is where the Steam Deck’s extra inputs become genuinely useful.

I’d personally experiment with:

  • Gyro aiming for fine corrections while aiming down sights.
  • Rear buttons for crouch, sprint, lean or communication.
  • Left trackpad for radial menus and frequently used commands.
  • Right stick for normal camera movement.

Gyro is particularly interesting.

You don’t need to turn the entire Steam Deck into a steering wheel. Use the stick for large movements and gyro for those final little corrections.

Once you get used to it, headshots and recoil control become much more comfortable.

The Settings I’d Change First

If you don’t want to spend half an hour staring at graphics menus, start here:

  1. Enable FSR 3 or XeSS.
  2. Set the upscaling quality to Balanced.
  3. Drop Shadows to Potato.
  4. Set Shading to Low.
  5. Put Effects and Particles on Low/Potato.
  6. Disable Motion Blur, Depth of Field, Bloom and Lens Flare.
  7. Keep Textures on High.
  8. Set View Distance to Low or Medium.
  9. Try a 40 or 45 FPS cap.
  10. Test the game in an actual large battle rather than judging performance in the menu.

That last point is important.

The menu isn’t WARDOGS.

A quiet corner of the map isn’t WARDOGS either.

The real benchmark is 50 angry players, three tanks, collapsing buildings and artillery landing five meters away.

That’s where you’ll discover whether your settings are actually working.

Final Verdict: Is WARDOGS Worth Playing on Steam Deck?

For me, the answer is yes—with realistic expectations.

WARDOGS is never going to transform the Steam Deck into a desktop gaming PC. If you’re expecting a locked 60 FPS through every 100-player battle, you’re probably going to be disappointed.

But that’s not the target I’d recommend.

With sensible Steam Deck settings, aggressive reductions to shadows and effects, temporal upscaling, sensible power management and a good control layout, WARDOGS can become a surprisingly convincing handheld tactical shooter.

The most important thing is understanding where the hardware struggles.

When the game is quiet, the Deck can deliver a smooth experience. When 20 players start fighting over an objective, things get heavier. When half the server arrives with tanks and explosives while a building collapses in front of you, you’re going to see the frame rate fall.

That’s the price of having a battlefield this ambitious running on a handheld.

And personally, I think that’s a fair trade.

I’d rather play a slightly blurry 40 FPS WARDOGS match where an entire apartment block gets demolished by a tank than stare at a gorgeous 60 FPS corridor shooter.

WARDOGS on Steam Deck isn’t perfect. It’s not even close. But with the right settings, it’s good enough to make the idea of taking a 100-player warzone in your backpack genuinely exciting.
