If there is one thing I have learned from playing competitive shooters, it is that good graphics are not always good gaming settings. A beautiful battlefield is nice for screenshots, but when you’re trying to spot an enemy 200 meters away while explosions are going off around you, stable FPS and clean visibility matter much more.

That is exactly how I would approach WARDOGS PC settings.

BULKHEAD and Team17 are aiming for a pretty ambitious multiplayer shooter: huge 100-player battles, three factions, vehicles, helicopters, destructible environments, and large Eastern European-style industrial maps. That combination sounds fantastic, but it also means your PC has a lot of work to do.

After looking through the available hardware targets and graphics options, I would not simply recommend putting everything on Low. WARDOGS has several settings where lowering quality actually hurts gameplay more than it helps performance. The trick is to spend your GPU budget on the things that help you see and fight, while cutting the effects that mostly make explosions prettier.

Below is the setup I would personally start with in 2026.

Let’s begin with the hardware. The official targets put WARDOGS in a fairly reasonable position compared with some recent Unreal Engine 5 shooters.

The GTX 1660 / RX 590 class is where I would draw the line for a serious 1080p setup. You can get into the game with older hardware, but large multiplayer battles are a completely different workload from an empty practice range.

The recommended RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT class makes much more sense if you’re targeting 1440p and want enough headroom for those moments when the entire battlefield suddenly turns into chaos.

And yes, 16 GB of RAM should be considered the practical minimum, not an invitation to run twenty Chrome tabs and Discord streams in the background while playing.

Potato Mode Isn’t a Joke

One of the more interesting ideas surrounding WARDOGS is its focus on scaling.

Potato Mode is aimed at players with weaker hardware. Instead of simply making everything look ugly, the idea is to aggressively reduce expensive rendering workloads so that lower-end systems can stay playable.

For a competitive shooter, I actually like this philosophy.

I’d rather have a game running at a consistent 70 FPS with simplified effects than one running at 45 FPS while showing me incredibly detailed rubble that I don’t have time to admire.

There is also the opposite philosophy with Overkill Mode. This is obviously aimed at powerful modern hardware and prioritizes maximum visual quality. If you’re running a high-end RTX 40/50-series or Radeon RX 7000/9000-series system, this is where you can start experimenting with the prettier settings.

Personally, though, I would keep Overkill for casual matches and screenshots. For competitive play, consistency wins.

My Recommended WARDOGS Graphics Settings

If my goal were maximum competitive performance without turning the game into a blurry mess, this is where I’d start:

This isn’t necessarily the “prettiest” WARDOGS configuration. It’s the configuration I’d actually want to play with.

Don’t Automatically Set Everything to Low

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see in PC shooter optimization.

Players often assume that Low = maximum FPS = competitive advantage.

Not always.

Take Mesh Detail, for example. If lowering it causes distant geometry to become less detailed or introduces aggressive pop-in, you may technically gain frames but lose information. In a game built around large battlefields and long sightlines, that trade-off isn’t attractive.

I’d keep Mesh Detail at High unless your GPU is really struggling.

Textures are another setting I wouldn’t sacrifice unnecessarily. Texture quality generally doesn’t destroy FPS when your GPU has enough VRAM. The problem starts when you run out of memory and the game begins struggling with asset streaming.

So my rule would be simple:

  • 8 GB+ VRAM: High textures are a good starting point.
  • 6 GB VRAM: Medium is safer.
  • Lower VRAM: prioritize stability over texture quality.

There is very little competitive benefit to ultra-high-resolution textures if they cause hitching.

Shadows Are Where I’d Start Cutting

If I’m trying to squeeze extra FPS from WARDOGS, shadows are one of the first things I would reduce.

High-quality shadows can be surprisingly expensive, particularly on large maps with lots of buildings, vehicles and dynamic objects.

Medium is my preferred starting point because the environment still has enough depth to look natural. If your frame rate is still below your target, move to Low.

I wouldn’t worry too much about losing cinematic atmosphere. In the middle of a 100-player battle, you’re probably going to be looking for movement, muzzle flashes and silhouettes rather than admiring the shadow quality on a warehouse.

Explosions Shouldn’t Kill Your FPS

This is another reason I prefer Medium Effects.

WARDOGS is built around combined-arms combat, so there will be moments when several vehicles, explosions and environmental effects are happening simultaneously.

That is exactly when you don’t want your GPU to suddenly decide it needs to render the world’s most beautiful cloud of smoke.

Lowering Effects Quality can help maintain more consistent performance during heavy firefights. And personally, I’d take a stable 100 FPS over a gorgeous explosion that drops me to 55 FPS at the exact moment someone starts shooting.

DLSS and FSR: Quality Is the Sweet Spot

If your GPU supports an appropriate upscaling technology, I’d start with Quality mode.

The advantage is straightforward: the game doesn’t have to render every pixel at full native resolution before reconstructing the final image.

For 1440p, Quality upscaling can be particularly attractive because the final image can remain surprisingly sharp while providing extra GPU headroom.

I wouldn’t immediately jump to Performance mode.

Yes, it can generate more FPS, but distant foliage, wires, small objects and enemy silhouettes are exactly where aggressive upscaling can become distracting.

For WARDOGS, target clarity is more important than chasing an extra 15 FPS that comes with shimmering and reconstruction artifacts.

My FOV Choice: 95

FOV is personal, but I’d start around 95.

A very high FOV gives you more peripheral information, which sounds perfect for competitive play. The downside is that everything in the distance occupies fewer pixels.

That’s particularly relevant for WARDOGS because its maps and combat scenarios encourage longer-range engagements.

At around 95, you still have decent peripheral awareness without making distant enemies unnecessarily tiny.

If you mostly fight aggressively with SMGs and assault rifles, you can experiment with a higher FOV. If you spend your time playing reconnaissance or long-range roles, I’d stay closer to the mid-90s.

Turn Motion Blur Off Immediately

This one isn’t even a debate for me.

Motion Blur: Off.

I understand why developers use it. It can make movement look smoother and more cinematic. But when I’m aiming, flicking my mouse or rapidly turning around after hearing footsteps, I want the image to remain as clear as possible.

The same goes for competitive visibility in vehicles.

There is no prize for having the most cinematic camera blur.

Why I Would Disable PiP Scopes

Picture-in-Picture scopes are visually impressive because the game essentially renders another view through the optic.

The problem is obvious: rendering another view costs performance.

If WARDOGS gives you the option to disable PiP scopes and use a simpler zoom presentation instead, I’d take the performance-friendly option for competitive play.

This is especially important if you’re already GPU-limited at native 1440p or higher resolutions.

A sniper scope should help me find an enemy, not make my graphics card fight a second battle.

What About Nvidia Reflex?

If you’re using a compatible Nvidia GPU, Reflex On + Boost is worth testing.

For a competitive FPS, raw FPS isn’t the only metric that matters. System latency matters too. You want the frame you see on your monitor to reflect your mouse movement and inputs as quickly as possible.

Reflex is designed to reduce latency in the rendering pipeline, while Boost can keep GPU clocks higher in certain situations.

If you’re on Nvidia hardware, this is one of those settings I’d leave enabled unless testing shows a specific issue on your system.

VSync: Off for Competitive Play

I’d normally recommend VSync Off for competitive WARDOGS.

VSync can eliminate tearing, but it can also add latency depending on the configuration.

If screen tearing really bothers you, there are other ways to approach the problem, including frame-rate caps and adaptive-sync technologies. But for a pure competitive setup, I want the game responding as quickly as possible.

A useful alternative is to cap FPS slightly below your monitor’s maximum refresh rate if that gives you more consistent frame pacing.

If WARDOGS Starts Stuttering

A high average FPS doesn’t mean much if the game constantly freezes for tiny fractions of a second.

If you notice stutters after a graphics driver update or major game patch, I’d go through the boring troubleshooting steps before changing twenty settings at random.

First, rebuild or clear the GPU shader cache if necessary. Shader compilation and corrupted cache data can sometimes produce strange stutters after updates.

Next, temporarily disable unnecessary overlays. Discord, recording software, monitoring tools and other applications that hook into the game can occasionally create conflicts.

I’d also verify the game files through Steam if crashes or missing assets suddenly appear.

Finally, make sure Windows and your GPU drivers are reasonably up to date. Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling can also be tested if you’re using modern hardware and features such as frame generation.

The Setup I’d Actually Use

If I were sitting down for a serious WARDOGS session, I wouldn’t chase benchmark numbers endlessly. I’d aim for stable frame pacing, low latency and clear target visibility.

My starting point would be:

Native resolution + Fullscreen + Quality DLSS/FSR + High Mesh + High/Medium Textures + Medium Shadows + Medium Effects + Low Volumetrics + Motion Blur Off + PiP Off + FOV 95.

Then I’d benchmark an actual large multiplayer battle rather than judging performance in an empty area.

That’s important because WARDOGS isn’t just a GPU stress test. A 100-player match with vehicles, destruction and multiple fights happening simultaneously can behave very differently from a quiet section of the map.

If your FPS is already comfortably above your monitor’s refresh rate, don’t lower settings just because a benchmark says you can gain another 10 frames.

Once performance is smooth, stop optimizing and start playing.

Final Thoughts

WARDOGS has the kind of design that makes PC optimization genuinely interesting. Large-scale battles, destructible environments and combined arms can create enormous CPU and GPU workloads, but that doesn’t mean you need a monster PC to enjoy the game.

The biggest lesson from these settings is simple: don’t sacrifice visibility for graphics quality, and don’t sacrifice stability just to make a screenshot look better.

For competitive players, I’d prioritize Mesh Detail, native-looking image quality and stable frame pacing, while cutting shadows, volumetric effects, motion blur and expensive scope rendering.

If you’re on a mid-range PC, Potato-style performance settings can make a lot of sense. If you’re sitting on a monster gaming rig, Overkill can certainly show off what WARDOGS is capable of visually.

But when the match starts and 100 players collide around a destroyed industrial complex?

I’ll take stable FPS and a clean sight picture every time.
