The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Save Coen’s Family (30-Day Quest Guide)
The Blood of Dawnwalker puts a nasty little twist on the usual open-world RPG formula: you aren’t simply trying to become stronger and eventually beat the main villain. You’re racing against a clock.
Rebel Wolves’ dark fantasy RPG drops Coen into Vale Sangora, a region already battered by war and the Black Death, and then makes his personal situation even worse. His family has been captured by the vampire lord Brencis, who plans to use them as sacrifices during his rise to power.
You’ve got 30 days and 30 nights to stop him.
That sounds generous until you actually start playing.
The problem isn’t just combat. Traveling, investigating locations, unlocking abilities, helping characters, and dealing with events can all eat into the time available to you. There is no comfortable checklist telling you which activities matter most. You have to make those calls yourself.
I’ve always liked RPGs that force you to live with your decisions, and this is easily one of the more interesting parts of The Blood of Dawnwalker. You can’t treat Vale Sangora like a theme park where every icon gets cleared before moving on. If you do, you can run out of time before the people you’re supposed to save are still alive.
Here’s how I’d approach the 30-day family rescue, including which systems deserve your attention, which allies are worth pursuing, and where I’d personally avoid wasting precious time.
The 30-Day Timer Changes Everything
The first thing to understand is that the countdown isn’t just there for dramatic effect.
Time is a resource.
Major activities and progression decisions consume portions of your available schedule. Exploring an interesting location might be worthwhile, but if it pushes your plans back at the wrong moment, you’ve effectively traded part of your family’s survival for loot or experience.
That creates a very different rhythm from a typical open-world game.
You should constantly be asking yourself:
- Does this activity make Coen stronger?
- Does it weaken Brencis?
- Does it recruit an important ally?
- Does it reveal information that helps the rescue?
If the answer to all four is no, I’d think twice before spending time on it.
There is plenty to see in Vale Sangora, and that’s exactly the trap. The game wants you to explore. But you aren’t playing with unlimited time.
Coen’s Day and Night Forms Are Your Biggest Advantage
Coen’s transformation into a Dawnwalker isn’t just a cool story gimmick. It fundamentally changes how you should approach the 30-day challenge.
During the day, Coen remains human. Sword combat, parries, blocking and Witchcraft become your main tools. This is where you’ll spend much of your time fighting traditionally, with abilities such as Artery Attack giving you powerful ways to finish enemies.
Witchcraft adds another layer to daytime combat. Abilities such as Burning Blood can inflict serious damage over time, giving you an answer to tougher enemies that would otherwise take too long to bring down.
The drawback is obvious: you’re still human.
Healing is more conventional, relying on food and potions rather than supernatural regeneration.
Night is where things get ridiculous.
Coen becomes a vampire, gaining access to wall climbing, teleportation, rapid movement and other abilities that completely change how you navigate the environment. You can approach encounters from angles that simply aren’t available during the day.
And then there’s Voracious Bite.
This ability is one of the reasons I strongly recommend getting comfortable with nighttime combat. Draining human enemies lets Coen restore health while dealing substantial damage. Against groups, it can turn a fight that looks dangerous into something much more manageable.
But there’s a catch.
Bloodlust and Corruption
Your vampiric power comes with consequences.
If you allow Coen’s bloodlust and corruption to spiral out of control, you can compromise important interactions with NPCs. That’s especially dangerous in a game where relationships and alliances can influence the larger conflict with Brencis.
So don’t think of vampirism as a free upgrade.
It’s power with a price.
I personally found the best approach to be aggressive at night but controlled. Use the vampire form to exploit mobility, positioning and healing rather than simply consuming everything that moves.
Start Preparing Before You Chase Brencis
One mistake I’d avoid is treating the first part of the game like a conventional power fantasy.
You aren’t ready to kick down Brencis’s front door during the opening days.
Instead, use the early game to establish your equipment, abilities and network of allies.
Explore the Deep Down Prologue
The Deep Down section is more useful than it might initially appear.
Before Coen’s transformation fully defines the rest of his journey, take the opportunity to investigate the underground areas thoroughly. Look for environmental clues, examine murals and search for hidden containers.
The early boss, The Forgotten Guardian, is particularly important because defeating it can provide equipment that makes the following stages considerably more comfortable.
I’m usually the kind of player who wants to sprint toward the next major objective, but this is one of those moments where a little exploration pays off.
Just don’t turn “explore thoroughly” into “spend half the game clearing every corner.”
Remember the clock.
Build Your Resistance Instead of Fighting Alone
One of the smartest things you can do in The Blood of Dawnwalker is build relationships with people who have their own reasons to hate Brencis.
Two names stand out.
Lacra
Lacra is a Vrakhiri whose personal history is closely connected to Brencis. Helping her resolve that conflict can turn her into a valuable ally.
This is exactly the sort of quest I would prioritize because you’re not simply getting another reward from an NPC. You’re potentially changing the balance of power before the final confrontation.
Crake
Crake represents the mortal resistance.
His group has its own reasons for opposing the vampire rulers, and convincing him to join your cause can give you something extremely valuable during the final stages: another force capable of putting pressure on Brencis’s defenses.
Pay attention to your dialogue choices here.
Coen’s remaining humanity matters, and if you approach these conversations like a ruthless vampire, you may close doors that could have helped you later.
The Court Is Your Real Target
If you remember only one thing from this guide, make it this:
Don’t think of Brencis as the only enemy. Think about the entire court protecting him.
The Court screen gives you an overview of Brencis’s power structure, including important advisors and confidants.
Those characters aren’t just optional boss fights.
They represent pieces of the defensive machine surrounding Brencis.
The more of that structure you dismantle, the better your chances become when the final assault arrives.
This is why I wouldn’t recommend spending your limited time grinding random enemies for experience when a significant court target is available.
You’re trying to reduce the difficulty of the final rescue, not create the strongest possible save file.
| Priority | What To Do | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Recruit Key Allies | Adds support for the final stages |
| 2 | Hunt Court Members | Weakens Brencis’s defenses |
| 3 | Upgrade Your Main Build | Makes important fights faster |
| 4 | Explore for Essential Gear | Helps avoid wasting time in combat |
| 5 | Optional Events | Only worth it when the reward justifies the time |
Zanthy and the Court’s Defenses
Eventually you’ll encounter powerful members of Brencis’s court, including Zanthy.
This isn’t the kind of encounter where blindly attacking usually works.
Her protection includes aggressive blood guards, and those enemies can overwhelm you if you don’t respect their attack patterns.
Nighttime combat gives you useful tools here. Learn to parry, use your mobility to avoid being surrounded, and don’t stand in front of multiple enemies waiting for the perfect counterattack.
Once the guards are dealt with, Zanthy’s ranged attacks become easier to manage.
Mobility is the key.
Don’t try to win every encounter by standing your ground. Coen’s vampire abilities exist specifically so you can dictate where the fight happens.
Don’t Waste Your Clock on Everything
The Tooth Fairy quest is a good example of the temptation facing you throughout Vale Sangora.
You’ll encounter a trail leading toward this strange NPC while exploring the wilderness. There are opportunities to deal with bandits and potentially turn their remains into resources or rewards.
It’s entertaining. It’s also exactly the kind of activity that can become a time sink.
If your equipment is weak, absolutely consider doing it.
If your build is already working and you’re preparing for a major court target?
I’d probably keep moving.
That might sound harsh, but the 30-day limit is the entire point of the game’s structure. Not every interesting quest deserves your attention on the same playthrough.
Which Build Should You Use?
There isn’t one mandatory build for saving Coen’s family, but I strongly recommend committing to a primary specialization rather than spreading every point across everything.
Swordmastery
If you prefer straightforward melee combat, Swordmastery is the obvious choice.
Invest heavily enough to unlock stronger defensive and offensive options, eventually working toward powerful perks such as Master of Arms.
This approach is especially comfortable if you enjoy learning enemy attack patterns and winning fights through parries and positioning.
Witchcraft
Witchcraft is my pick if you enjoy making enemies suffer before finishing them with the sword.
Burning Blood is particularly useful against tougher targets because damage-over-time effects allow you to keep pressure on enemies while concentrating on defense.
It’s a great option for players who don’t want every fight to become a slugfest.
Vampirism
And then there’s the obvious choice: embrace the monster.
The Vampirism pathway focuses on nighttime combat, mobility, corruption management and improved life-stealing.
Perks such as Creature of the Night push Coen toward his supernatural strengths, allowing him to move around the battlefield quickly and recover health through vampiric abilities.
If you enjoy aggressive play, this can be extremely satisfying.
The important part is consistency.
Pick a main path and make it strong. A mediocre version of three builds isn’t nearly as useful as one well-developed specialization when the final fights arrive.
When Should You Attack Brencis?
Don’t rush the castle simply because you’ve become strong enough to survive nearby enemies.
The final assault should come after you’ve done meaningful damage to Brencis’s network.
Ideally, you’ve:
- Recruited useful allies.
- Defeated important court members.
- Established a reliable combat build.
- Collected enough equipment to avoid unnecessary grinding.
If you’ve done that, the final days become much more manageable.
And if you have Crake and his rebels working with you, the assault can play out very differently. Their attack can draw attention toward the main defenses while Coen searches for another way inside.
That’s exactly how I’d approach it.
Why fight an entire army if you can convince someone else to start the fight for you?
Getting Inside the Fortress
Once the assault begins, take advantage of Coen’s nighttime abilities.
Vertical traversal becomes particularly useful here. Instead of treating the fortress like a traditional dungeon with one obvious route, look for opportunities to climb, teleport and bypass patrols.
A key from a nearby high-ranking guard can provide access to the cathedral area without forcing you into every confrontation along the way.
This is one of those situations where the vampire side of Coen feels like more than a combat gimmick.
The environment itself becomes part of your build.
A player who understands Coen’s mobility can save time and health simply by refusing to fight enemies that don’t need to be fought.
The Brencis Fight
Eventually, there is nowhere left to run.
Brencis is the fight that tests whether your preparation actually worked.
During the day, Witchcraft gives you useful tools for maintaining pressure and dealing with his defenses while you rely on your sword for direct damage.
At night, you’ll have to meet supernatural speed with supernatural speed. Use your mobility instead of trying to trade attacks with him constantly.
If his forces are still around, Voracious Bite can also help keep Coen healthy by feeding on suitable human enemies.
The biggest mistake I’d make here is getting impatient.
You’ve spent potentially dozens of in-game days preparing for this moment. Don’t throw the fight away because you want to finish it thirty seconds faster.
Watch the attacks. Move. Punish openings.

Saving Coen’s Family
Defeating Brencis is the obvious objective, but the rescue itself still matters.
Once the vampire lord is down, get to the ritual area and free Coen’s family as quickly as possible.
The final hours of your schedule can matter, so don’t suddenly decide this is the perfect moment to wander off and collect one last piece of loot.
Your family is literally waiting for you.
That’s the finish line.
If you’ve weakened Brencis’s court, recruited the right allies and managed your time properly, you can reach the end with Coen’s family alive and escape Vale Sangora with the outcome you’re aiming for.

My Biggest Advice for the 30-Day Challenge
If I had to condense this entire Blood of Dawnwalker guide into one piece of advice, it would be simple:
Stop trying to do everything.
That’s the hardest habit to break in an open-world RPG.
We’re trained to clear maps. We collect every chest. We finish every side quest. We kill every enemy camp because the experience is sitting there.
The Blood of Dawnwalker actively punishes that mentality.
The 30-day countdown means you have to make choices. Some quests matter more than others. Some allies are worth more than another pile of gold. Some fights should be avoided entirely.
Treat your time like another resource alongside health, experience and equipment.
Build one strong combat path. Recruit people who can actually help you. Use the Court system to identify Brencis’s important defenders. Take advantage of Coen’s human abilities during the day and his vampire powers at night.
And above all, keep your eyes on the clock.
Because in this RPG, the strongest Coen isn’t necessarily the one with the most abilities or the best sword.
He’s the one who reaches his family before the last day runs out.
