Zombie Army 4 Solo Horde Mode Guide: Best Characters & Builds (2026)

If you ask me what makes Zombie Army 4: Dead War’s Horde Mode so brutal, it isn’t the number of zombies on screen. The real problem is that the game eventually finds a way to attack you from three directions at once.

A normal four-player squad can recover from a mistake. Someone can revive you, distract a Heavy Gunner, deal with a Screamer, or simply pull a few zombies away while you reload. Playing Horde Mode solo removes all of that. Every kill is yours, every elite enemy is your problem, and every bad positioning decision can snowball into a complete wipe.

That changes how I approach the mode.

After spending a lot of time with Zombie Army 4, I don’t think the strongest solo character is necessarily the one with the highest damage potential. Mobility, stamina, healing, Takedowns, and access to your special abilities become far more important when there is nobody behind you.

So, if you’re trying to push toward Wave 20 and beyond, here are the characters, perks, weapons, and habits I would personally prioritize for a serious solo Horde run.

My Solo Horde Character Tier List

Zombie Army 4 Solo Horde Mode Guide: Best Characters & Builds (2026)

TierCharactersWhy I Rate Them
S-TierJun, HectorOutstanding mobility, sustain, and solo survivability
A-TierBoris, Werner, SholaExtremely powerful but require more specific playstyles
B-TierKarl, Marie, Josiah, BrunoStill viable, but less optimized for surviving alone

This isn’t saying that the B-Tier characters are bad. Zombie Army 4 gives you enough weapon flexibility that almost anyone can succeed in the right hands. The difference is how much work you have to put in to get the same result.

For me, Jun and Hector are the two characters I would pick first for a serious solo Horde attempt.

1. Jun – My Favorite Solo Pick

If I’m loading into Horde Mode alone and my only objective is to survive as long as possible, Jun is probably my first choice.

The reason is simple: solo Horde rewards movement.

You don’t want to stand in the middle of an arena and fight every zombie head-on. Eventually, the numbers become too large. You need to keep creating distance, change your position, manipulate the horde’s movement, and find moments where you can safely eliminate priority targets.

Jun fits that style beautifully.

Why Jun Works So Well

Her biggest advantage is how efficiently she can generate and use her Brain Buster ability. Since you’re responsible for essentially every kill in a solo game, getting your special ability charged quickly can make a massive difference.

A well-timed Brain Buster isn’t just another damage button. It’s an emergency tool.

If a wave starts closing around you, the ability can rapidly remove several threats while allowing you to focus on repositioning. I especially like having it available when elite enemies appear at the same time as a large group of ordinary zombies.

Jun’s stamina characteristics are just as important.

Stamina is survival in solo Horde.

You can have the best weapon in the game, but if you run out of stamina while trying to escape a horde, your run can end in seconds. Jun’s movement-oriented advantages make it much easier to rotate around an arena and reach ammunition or heavy weapons without getting trapped.

My Jun Strategy

I like to create a controlled zombie train.

Keep moving, let the horde gather behind you, turn briefly when you have enough space, use Brain Buster or concentrated fire to remove the front section, then immediately start moving again.

Don’t get greedy.

That’s probably the biggest mistake I see in Horde-style gameplay: killing ten extra zombies isn’t worth dying because you stayed in one position for five seconds too long.

2. Hector – The Best Character for Aggressive Players

Jun is about avoiding danger.

Hector is about surviving it.

If your preferred playstyle involves getting close, performing Takedowns, and aggressively controlling crowds, Hector is incredibly difficult to ignore.

His biggest advantage comes from his Takedown-oriented mechanics. Takedowns are already one of the most valuable survival tools in Zombie Army 4, because they can restore resources and keep your character functioning when ammunition and health are becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

Hector makes that system feel much more reliable.

Why I Like Hector in Solo Horde

When you’re alone, every resource matters.

A Medkit is valuable. Ammunition is valuable. Grenades are valuable. A safe opportunity to restore your health is even more valuable.

Hector’s ability to get into Takedown situations more frequently gives him a natural sustain loop.

He also has useful protection against melee damage, which sounds like a small bonus until you’re on a high wave and zombies are attacking from every direction.

Those little hits add up.

A couple of mistakes that wouldn’t matter on Wave 5 can become fatal on Wave 18.

How I Play Hector

I usually pair Hector with an automatic weapon capable of dumping a lot of rounds into a crowd, then use Takedowns when the horde starts getting close.

The important part is knowing when to disengage.

Hector can handle chaos better than many characters, but he isn’t immortal. If you’re surrounded by several elite enemies, don’t assume your Takedown mechanics will save you. Use them to stabilize the situation, then get moving.

3. Boris – Brutal Damage With a Serious Catch

Boris is the character I would recommend to players who already understand Horde Mode’s positioning.

He can be absolutely terrifying in close quarters.

His melee-oriented strengths make him capable of deleting groups of zombies very quickly, especially when you combine his abilities with powerful melee weapons.

The problem?

He’s slow.

And being slow in solo Horde is dangerous.

When you have teammates, someone can cover you while you reposition. When you’re alone, a movement disadvantage becomes much more significant.

When Boris Makes Sense

I wouldn’t use Boris if my plan was to constantly run around an open arena.

Instead, I would build my strategy around choke points.

Find locations where the zombies are forced into predictable routes. Let them come to you, use melee attacks to destroy the front of the group, and maintain enough space to retreat before the entire horde reaches you.

Perks that improve survivability and compensate for his weaknesses become particularly valuable.

Boris can feel like a walking tank, but even a tank needs somewhere to retreat.

4. Werner – The Sustain Specialist

Werner is another character I think becomes more interesting the longer a Horde run lasts.

Early waves don’t always expose the difference between characters. You have ammunition, health, and plenty of room to make mistakes.

Later waves are different.

That’s where healing efficiency starts becoming a major part of your build.

Werner’s advantages around Divine mechanics and healing allow him to get more value from resources that other characters might use less efficiently.

For a solo player, that’s huge.

My Werner Setup

If I’m playing Werner, I’d strongly consider building around the Divine Hammer.

The Hammer gives you an excellent panic button when enemies close in, while Divine mechanics can help restore health and control the immediate area.

This makes Werner especially attractive if you prefer a slower, methodical approach rather than constantly sprinting around the map.

He’s not my personal first choice, but I can absolutely understand why someone would prefer him for long survival attempts.

The Solo Horde Perks I Would Prioritize

Character selection is only half the build.

Your perk choices should support one basic philosophy:

You have nobody coming to save you.

That means I value perks that help me recover from mistakes rather than perks that only make an already-good situation slightly better.

1. Second Chance

For solo play, this is one of the most important safety nets available.

Being downed doesn’t necessarily mean the run is over if you can successfully use the perk’s self-revive mechanic.

Of course, relying on Second Chance isn’t a strategy. It’s insurance.

And in solo Horde, I want insurance.

2. Weapon Focus Expert

This perk becomes extremely useful when paired with an automatic secondary weapon.

Weapon Focus can give you a precious window where accuracy and crowd control become much easier. When twenty zombies are charging down a corridor, that moment of control can be the difference between escaping and getting flattened.

I especially like it when dealing with high-priority targets.

3. SMG Ammo Pouch

Ammo problems become increasingly annoying as waves climb.

You don’t want to reach the point where your best weapon is empty and you’re forced to fight a Heavy enemy with whatever ammunition happens to be lying around.

Extra SMG ammunition gives your build much more breathing room.

4. Hardened or Bullet Resistance

Damage reduction isn’t flashy, but I value it highly.

A single mistake against ordinary zombies is manageable. A mistake followed by an elite enemy attack can be devastating.

These defensive options help prevent small errors from immediately becoming run-ending disasters.

5. Stamina Defense or Enhanced Vigor

For Jun, I especially like leaning into stamina.

For slower characters, health and defensive improvements can be more attractive.

The important thing is to build around the character’s weakness rather than blindly copying the same setup every time.

The Weapons I Trust Most

The MP44 is one of my favorite choices for solo Horde.

It isn’t because it magically solves every problem. It’s because it gives you a reliable combination of firepower, ammunition efficiency, and versatility.

With the right upgrades and Weapon Focus, it can shred ordinary zombies while still being useful against tougher targets.

I also like having a weapon that can transition quickly between crowd control and precision shooting.

Your secondary shouldn’t just be something you pull out when the primary runs dry. In a serious Horde build, both weapons should have a purpose.

Heavy weapons are another story.

Don’t waste them.

If a Heavy Machine Gun or flamethrower drops early in a wave, I usually think twice before grabbing it unless I genuinely need it.

Instead, I prefer leaving powerful weapons near a position I expect to use later.

When several elite enemies spawn simultaneously, having heavy firepower already waiting for you can completely change the situation.

Solo Horde Tactics That Actually Matter

Keep One Zombie Alive

This is one of those Horde habits that sounds strange until you try it.

At the end of a wave, if possible, leave one basic zombie alive.

That gives you a short period of relative safety to:

  • Collect ammunition.
  • Pick up grenades.
  • Search for Medkits.
  • Reposition heavy weapons.
  • Move toward a better defensive position.
  • Restock at ammunition crates.

Don’t rush to end the wave just because you can.

That final zombie is effectively your preparation timer.

Use it.

Learn to Stack Grenades

Grenades become much stronger when you stop throwing them randomly.

A Bait Grenade can gather enemies into a concentrated group. That’s exactly what you want before following up with a stronger explosive or Divine-based attack.

The basic idea is:

Group them → weaken them → explode them.

This is much more efficient than throwing explosives into a scattered crowd.

If you can combine that setup with explosive environmental objects, even better.

Don’t Waste Heavy Weapons on Trash Mobs

This is probably one of the easiest mistakes to make.

You see a flamethrower.

You get excited.

You hold the trigger.

Thirty seconds later, the weapon is empty and the real enemies have finally arrived.

Don’t do that.

Heavy weapons should be reserved for moments where they solve an actual problem.

Heavy Gunners, Flamers, large groups of elites, emergency crowd control — those are the situations where I want my strongest tools available.

How I Handle the Flamethrower

One of my biggest tips is simple:

Don’t hold the trigger forever.

The flamethrower is much more efficient when you use short bursts to ignite enemies and then let the burning effect do some of the work.

Set a group on fire, move away, and focus your attention somewhere else.

This is especially useful when you’re trying to manage multiple groups simultaneously.

You don’t need to stand there staring at burning zombies.

The Biggest Solo Horde Mistakes

Even with the right character and build, you can throw away a good run surprisingly quickly.

The mistakes I try hardest to avoid are:

  1. Standing still for too long. The horde eventually surrounds stationary players.
  2. Using every resource immediately. Saving heavy weapons and grenades for dangerous waves is often smarter.
  3. Ignoring stamina. Running out of stamina at the wrong moment can be more dangerous than running out of ammunition.
  4. Chasing kills. You don’t need to kill everything instantly. Survival comes first.
  5. Ignoring elite enemies. A normal zombie isn’t usually the reason a high-wave run dies. The dangerous enemy behind the crowd is.
  6. Forgetting the map. Knowing where ammunition, healing, choke points, and escape routes are located is part of your build.

My Final Solo Horde Ranking

If I were starting a serious run today, my personal order would be:

Jun > Hector > Werner > Boris > Shola > Karl/Marie/Josiah/Bruno

Jun is my overall favorite because mobility gives you so many ways to recover from a bad situation.

Hector is my pick when I want to play aggressively and turn Takedowns into a survival engine.

Werner is the character I’d choose when I want to focus heavily on sustain and Divine mechanics.

Boris can be devastating, but I think his slow movement makes him less forgiving than the characters above him.

The important thing is that there isn’t a single build that magically carries you to Wave 20.

Zombie Army 4 Horde Mode is ultimately a game of positioning, resource management, target priority, and knowing when to stop fighting and start running. The character you choose simply determines how forgiving those decisions are.

For me, that’s why Jun stands at the top.

She doesn’t make the zombies weaker. She gives me more opportunities to avoid the situations where their numbers become overwhelming.

And in solo Horde Mode, that’s exactly what I want.

Kill efficiently. Keep moving. Save your strongest tools for the moments that matter. Never let the horde dictate where you fight.

Do those four things consistently, and those later waves suddenly feel a lot less impossible.
