STALKER 2 All Endings Guide: How to Get Skif True Ending and Best Choices
There are few things I enjoy more in a game than reaching the final stretch and suddenly realizing that a handful of dialogue choices can completely change how the story ends. STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl does exactly that.
After spending dozens of hours wandering through the Zone, getting shot at by factions, hunting artifacts, dealing with mutants, and generally wondering whether the next building contains loot or a horrible death, the game eventually narrows everything down to a few critical decisions.
And honestly? These choices are easy to underestimate.
The game doesn’t constantly wave a giant “THIS WILL AFFECT THE ENDING” warning in your face. Instead, the most important decisions arrive during three late-game missions: Subtle Matter, Dangerous Liaisons, and The Last Wish. If you’re chasing a particular ending, especially what the community often calls the True Skif Ending or Kaymanov Ending, these are the moments where you need to pay attention.
So, if you’re planning to finish STALKER 2 and want to see the ending that feels most closely tied to Skif’s own path, here’s how I approached it.
The Three Missions You Really Need to Remember
One thing I like about STALKER 2’s ending structure is that you don’t have to micromanage every conversation for the entire game.
Earlier decisions can influence faction relationships and the way certain situations play out, but the major ending branches are concentrated around three late-game quests:
- Subtle Matter
- Dangerous Liaisons
- The Last Wish
Think of these as the final switches on the railway track. Once you make the wrong choice for your desired ending, you’re heading somewhere else.
That also means I strongly recommend keeping a manual save before these missions. Trust me, replaying several hours just to see another ending is not nearly as fun as loading an old save and immediately trying the alternative.
How to Get the True Skif Ending
If you’re after the ending generally associated with Skif’s independent path, the important thing is to avoid fully committing yourself to either Spark or Ward.
The route is essentially about Skif refusing to become another faction’s pawn.
Here are the choices you want.
1. Subtle Matter — Choose “Life is for the living”
During Subtle Matter, Skif uses the visiograph at Orbita Station before his confrontation with Scar.
This is your first major checkpoint.
When Scar presents the ideological choice concerning the future of the Zone, select:
“Life is for the living.”
This pushes Skif away from Scar and the Spark faction’s vision. Scar subsequently becomes an enemy rather than an ally on this particular route.
I actually prefer this choice from a character perspective. Skif has spent so much of the story being dragged into other people’s plans that refusing Scar’s worldview feels like one of the first moments where he genuinely chooses his own direction.
2. Dangerous Liaisons — Choose “Escape”
The second major decision comes in Dangerous Liaisons.
Skif is captured by Colonel Korshunov and brought into the orbit of the Ward faction. Korshunov naturally wants Skif to cooperate with Ward’s objectives.
Don’t.
Choose:
“Escape.”
This is the point where Skif effectively burns the bridge with Ward.
Korshunov becomes hostile, and Skif’s relationship with the military faction takes a very different turn.
At this stage, the route is beginning to take shape. You’re rejecting Scar, rejecting Ward, and refusing to let either side dictate what happens to the Zone.
3. The Last Wish — Lower the Gun
This is the big one.
During The Last Wish, Skif encounters Professor Kaymanov in the Red Forest. Strelok pushes for the obvious solution: eliminate him.
But if you’re trying to reach the True Skif Ending, don’t pull the trigger.
Select:
“[Lower the gun]”
That’s the final piece of the puzzle.
Skif refuses to kill Kaymanov, allowing him to disappear into the approaching emission storm. From here, the story moves toward its final sequence and the strange fate waiting for Skif.
True Skif Ending Choices at a Glance
| Mission | Choice |
|---|---|
| Subtle Matter | Life is for the living |
| Dangerous Liaisons | Escape |
| The Last Wish | [Lower the gun] |
If you’re going for this ending, these are the three choices I’d write down before starting the final stretch.
What Happens in the True Skif Ending?
Major spoilers from here on out.
The final sequence gets considerably stranger than the straightforward faction conflict that dominates much of the late game.
By this point, Skif has effectively positioned himself against several of the Zone’s major players. The conflict eventually leads to confrontations involving figures such as Korshunov, Strelok, and Scar, with the final events becoming increasingly surreal.
Skif eventually reaches the central experimental infrastructure and enters the eighth O-CTA pod, a chamber connected to Kaymanov’s role in the Zone’s history.
And this is where things get weird.
The game shifts away from a conventional action-heavy finale and moves into a sequence of visions and fragmented memories. Skif experiences images connected to his past, the Alpha Artifact, and the mysterious history surrounding the Zone’s experiments.
One of the more unsettling aspects of the sequence is that the story suddenly stops feeling like a conflict contained inside the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.
The implications become much bigger.
The visions and emergency reports suggest that anomalous activity is no longer something the world can simply keep behind a perimeter. The Zone’s influence appears to be spreading far beyond Ukraine, with reports of anomalous phenomena appearing across the globe.
And that’s the part that really stuck with me.
The ending doesn’t simply say, “Skif won.”
It basically asks: what happens when the Zone stops being a place and becomes a worldwide problem?
Why the True Skif Ending Feels Like a Setup for More STALKER
Of the major conclusions, this route arguably leaves the most room for future stories.
A traditional ending that seals the Zone or gives one faction control provides a fairly clean stopping point. The True Skif route does almost the opposite.
The problem gets bigger.
Much bigger.
Instead of the Zone remaining an isolated nightmare in Eastern Europe, anomalous activity begins appearing in other parts of the world. That opens up a ridiculous number of possibilities for future stories, expansions, and locations.
Personally, this is why I find the ending so interesting.
Imagine a future STALKER expansion where the familiar Zone isn’t the only dangerous place on Earth anymore. Different regions could develop their own anomalies, artifacts, factions, and survival cultures. It would be a major change from the traditional STALKER formula without completely abandoning the ideas that make the series work.
Whether that was always the intention or simply a convenient way to leave the door open, it works.
The Other STALKER 2 Endings
Of course, the True Skif Ending isn’t the only conclusion.
STALKER 2 has several major ending routes, and the easiest way to understand them is by looking at the final faction decisions.
Strelok Ending
The Strelok route represents a much more isolated future for the Zone.
The key decisions are:
- Subtle Matter: “Life is for the living”
- Dangerous Liaisons: “Escape”
- The Last Wish: “[Fire]”
The critical difference is the final decision involving Kaymanov.
Choosing to fire sends the story down Strelok’s path, where the Zone becomes effectively isolated from the outside world.
It’s a much more closed ending than the True Skif route.
Ward Ending
The Ward ending requires Skif to cooperate with Colonel Korshunov rather than escape.
The important choices are:
- Subtle Matter: “Life is for the living”
- Dangerous Liaisons: “I’m not your enemy”
This puts Skif firmly on Ward’s side and leads to a dramatically different conclusion.
Thematically, this is probably the most straightforward “control the Zone” solution. Ward attempts to turn something dangerous and unpredictable into something humanity can understand and exploit.
Considering how well that usually works in STALKER…
Yeah. I’m not exactly convinced.
Scar Ending
The Scar route is the most closely connected to Spark and Scar’s vision.
The key choices are:
- Subtle Matter: “Eternal spring”
- Dangerous Liaisons: “Escape”
This ending leads toward the so-called Shining Zone, presenting an eerie vision of peace and tranquility.
The catch is that the apparent paradise is far more disturbing than it initially looks. The Zone isn’t simply becoming a better place. Instead, people are being trapped inside an illusion that carries devastating consequences.
It’s probably the ending that best captures one of the central ideas behind STALKER: something that looks beautiful can still be horribly wrong.

STALKER 2 Ending Choice Comparison
| Ending | Subtle Matter | Dangerous Liaisons | The Last Wish |
|---|---|---|---|
| True Skif | Life is for the living | Escape | Lower the gun |
| Strelok | Life is for the living | Escape | Fire |
| Ward | Life is for the living | I’m not your enemy | — |
| Scar | Eternal spring | Escape | — |
Which Ending Should You Get First?
If this is your first STALKER 2 playthrough, I’d personally recommend going for the True Skif Ending.
Not because it’s necessarily the happiest ending. Far from it.
I just think it gives Skif the strongest sense of personal agency.
The Ward route is about surrendering to an institution. Scar’s route is about embracing a dangerous ideology. Strelok’s route is about isolation and control. The True Skif route feels more like Skif saying, “None of you get to decide what happens to me.”
And that feels appropriate for the character.
It also leaves the biggest questions hanging in the air, which is exactly what I want from a STALKER ending. I don’t need every mystery explained. Half the fun of this series is staring at something completely incomprehensible and thinking, What the hell did I just witness?
Final Thoughts
The STALKER 2 endings are built around a surprisingly small number of decisions, but those decisions carry a lot of weight. If you’re specifically hunting for the True Skif Ending, remember the three choices: “Life is for the living,” “Escape,” and “[Lower the gun].”
Keep a backup save before the late-game missions, because once you start experimenting with the endings, you’ll probably want to see the alternatives too.
For me, the True Skif conclusion is the most interesting because it doesn’t make the Zone smaller. It makes the entire world feel larger and considerably more dangerous.
And honestly, that’s a pretty fitting way to end a STALKER game.
The Zone was never really about giving you clean answers. It was about walking into something you don’t understand, making a choice, and living with whatever comes next.
Skif just happens to discover that “whatever comes next” might involve the entire planet.</strong
