Gothic 1 Remake Best Camp to Join: Full Faction Guide & Meta Analysis

When I started my first serious playthrough of Gothic 1 Remake, I thought I already knew the answer to the classic question every player eventually faces: Which camp should I join? After all, many of us spent countless hours in the original Gothic back in the early 2000s.

Then the remake happened.

After dozens of hours exploring every corner of the Valley of Mines, replaying faction questlines, and reading countless discussions from veteran players, I came to a surprising conclusion: the “best” camp depends far more on your preferred gameplay style than many guides suggest.

Still, some camps clearly offer stronger advantages in certain areas, and if you’re starting your first playthrough, understanding those strengths can save you from regretting your decision later.

Before discussing the factions themselves, there is one piece of advice I would give every new player.

Don’t join a camp immediately.

Visit all three settlements first. Complete their introductory quests. Speak with their leaders. Earn as much experience as possible before committing. Gothic has always rewarded patient players, and the remake continues that tradition beautifully.

Why Your Camp Choice Matters More Than You Think

Unlike many modern RPGs where factions barely affect gameplay, Gothic’s camps fundamentally shape your journey.

Your choice influences:

  • Available trainers
  • Armor progression
  • Combat specialization
  • Magic development
  • Story perspective
  • Relationships with key NPCs

For a significant portion of the game, your camp effectively becomes your home, and the people around you become your allies—or at least as close to allies as anyone gets inside the Barrier.

Because of that, choosing based purely on aesthetics can sometimes lead to disappointment if the gameplay doesn’t match your expectations.

Let’s break down all three options.

Old Camp – The Classic Gothic Experience

If someone asked me which faction feels the most “Gothic,” I would answer Old Camp without hesitation.

This is the first major settlement most players encounter, and it immediately establishes the brutal social hierarchy that defines life inside the colony.

The atmosphere here is incredible.

Massive stone walls, heavily armed guards, shady merchants, corrupt officials, and a constant feeling that everyone is trying to use you for their own benefit. It feels alive in a way few RPG settlements do.

What Makes Old Camp Strong?

The biggest advantage is structure.

While the other camps often feel chaotic, the Old Camp offers a clear path for character progression.

Players focused on ranged combat will appreciate early access to powerful crossbow training. Those interested in magic can begin moving toward the Fire Mage path relatively early compared to alternative magical routes.

Some of the strongest early-game equipment can also be obtained through faction-related quests inside the castle district.

Strengths

  • Excellent quest design
  • Strong early-game progression
  • Great crossbow specialization
  • Traditional mage route
  • Iconic Gothic atmosphere

Weaknesses

  • Less freedom than other factions
  • Heavily tied to major story events
  • More rigid advancement system

Personally, I think Old Camp delivers the most authentic first-playthrough experience. If someone has never played Gothic before, this is usually the faction I recommend.

New Camp – The Min-Maxer’s Dream

If Old Camp represents order, then New Camp represents absolute freedom.

Located around an enormous dam and hidden deep within a rugged valley, this faction was founded by people who rejected the authority of the Ore Barons.

The first impression isn’t particularly welcoming.

The place is rough.

The NPCs are suspicious.

Nobody cares about your problems.

And honestly, that’s exactly why many players love it.

Why Power Gamers Love New Camp

From a purely mechanical perspective, New Camp arguably provides the strongest long-term character growth.

The Mercenary progression path is exceptionally rewarding for melee-focused builds.

One of the biggest advantages is how efficiently you can invest learning points. Experienced players often point out that New Camp allows you to focus on powerful two-handed weapons earlier than many competing builds.

This creates a noticeable power spike during the mid-game.

The armor progression is also excellent, making difficult encounters much more manageable once you start climbing the ranks.

Strengths

  • Outstanding melee progression
  • Powerful mid-game armor
  • Excellent long-term scaling
  • Flexible character builds
  • Strong warrior-mage potential

Weaknesses

  • Harsh early game
  • Less beginner-friendly
  • Bleaker atmosphere
  • Slower narrative payoff

If your goal is to build the strongest possible warrior, New Camp is probably the faction that offers the most value.

Several of my favorite playthroughs ended up here simply because the character progression feels incredibly rewarding.

Sect Camp – The Most Unique Faction in the Game

I have a soft spot for Sect Camp.

Mechanically, it may not always be the strongest choice.

Atmospherically?

Nothing comes close.

Deep within the swamp, surrounded by dangerous creatures and thick fog, the Brotherhood feels completely different from everything else in the game.

The glowing lights, strange rituals, mysterious teachings, and constant references to the Sleeper create an atmosphere that remains unforgettable even decades after the original release.

Why Players Fall in Love with Sect Camp

The Brotherhood offers a fascinating hybrid playstyle.

Templars combine martial combat with magical utility, creating a character that feels versatile throughout much of the game.

One of the most enjoyable aspects is gaining access to useful magical abilities relatively early.

While other factions may eventually surpass the Brotherhood in raw magical potential, few provide such a fun mix of combat and utility during the early and middle chapters.

The faction also features some surprisingly strong armor options for its stage of progression.

Strengths

  • Best atmosphere in the game
  • Unique lore and storytelling
  • Early magic access
  • Strong hybrid gameplay
  • Memorable faction identity

Weaknesses

  • Lower magical ceiling
  • Fewer endgame advantages
  • Less optimization potential

If immersion matters more to you than statistics, Sect Camp is difficult to beat.

Even today, many veteran Gothic fans consider it the most memorable faction in the entire franchise.

My Personal Ranking

After spending considerable time with all three factions, my ranking looks like this:

1. New Camp

For gameplay efficiency, character growth, and build flexibility, New Camp offers the strongest overall package.

2. Old Camp

The best choice for first-time players and arguably the most iconic Gothic experience available in the remake.

3. Sect Camp

Not necessarily the strongest faction, but easily the most memorable and atmospheric.

Final Verdict

The brilliance of Gothic 1 Remake is that none of the camps feel like a wrong choice.

Each faction represents a different philosophy of survival inside the Barrier.

  • The Old Camp offers security and tradition.
  • The New Camp offers freedom and power.
  • The Sect Camp offers mystery and belief.

If you’re chasing pure efficiency, join the New Camp.

If you want the definitive Gothic storyline experience, choose the Old Camp.

If you want the most unique adventure the game can offer, follow the Brotherhood into the swamp.

My advice? Explore them all before deciding. Talk to every important NPC. Complete every early quest you can find. The Valley of Mines rewards curiosity, and your eventual faction choice will feel far more meaningful because of it.

And that’s exactly why, more than twenty years later, Gothic’s faction system remains one of the best ever created in an RPG.
