Build the Foundation Before You Build the Dream

If you are planning a massive keep, don’t immediately start placing walls. That is how you end up wasting hundreds or thousands of stone.

Start with the site.

Use the Hoe to create a reasonably clean building area and remove rocks or awkward terrain where necessary. Then establish your main foundation and check its stability before moving upward.

I recommend thinking about the castle in sections. Instead of trying to build one enormous unsupported rectangle, divide the fortress into towers, halls, courtyards, and smaller structural zones. Each major section can have its own support network.

This also makes construction much easier to manage. If one tower starts showing poor stability, you can fix that tower without tearing apart half of your castle.
