On paper, almost every creature looks useful. In practice, some animals are fantastic additions to a growing bioengineering operation, while others are basically walking disasters that I would rather leave several kilometers away from my walls.   • Long-Term Utility: Whether the species remains useful after better technology and more advanced creatures become available.

That last category matters more than people might expect. I don’t care if an animal gives you a nice early-game resource if you’re going to abandon it five hours later. The best creatures are the ones that continue paying off as your operation expands.

The Creature I Would Hunt Down First for Advanced Genetics

If you’re building this tier list around late-game bioengineering rather than simply surviving your first few hours, the Scorchweaver is the obvious S-Tier pick.

These creatures inhabit some of the nastier thermal and rocky regions of Sota7, and that location alone tells you what makes them special. They are adapted to environmental conditions that would be a serious problem for less specialized organisms.

That resilience is incredibly valuable when you start working with genetic modification.

Scorchweaver genetic material can be used to introduce strong environmental resistance into other organisms. This is where the creature goes from “interesting alien animal” to “I really need one of these in my research database.”

A properly modified animal with Scorchweaver traits can tolerate harsher environmental conditions, potentially reducing the amount of infrastructure you need to keep your biological operation stable. Instead of constantly throwing resources at environmental controls, you can make the organism itself more resilient.

My verdict: If you’re serious about advanced crossbreeding, don’t ignore Scorchweaver specimens just because capturing them is more dangerous. The risk actually makes sense here because the genetic payoff is so strong.

The Lucuma Camilla isn’t necessarily the most exciting creature on Sota7. That’s precisely why I like it.

Think of it as your reliable laboratory template.

Want to experiment with aggressive traits? Start with something stable. Trying to combine unusual environmental adaptations? Again, a dependable genetic foundation can make the process considerably more manageable.

Outside the laboratory, Lucuma Camilla specimens also provide useful organic materials for crafting and production. That makes them much more than disposable breeding stock.

My verdict: If I had to choose one creature to maintain as a permanent breeding population, this would be one of my first choices. It’s not flashy, but reliable animals are extremely valuable once your base becomes complicated.

A-Tier: Wild Green Zuma

Small, Harmless, and Much More Useful Than It Looks

The Wild Green Zuma is the kind of creature players can easily underestimate. It’s small, friendly, and hardly looks like something that belongs on a serious bioengineering tier list.

Then you start breeding them.

Zumas have a fast metabolic cycle and can process basic aquatic vegetation into useful organic materials. Because they are easy to capture and relatively simple to maintain, they fit beautifully into an early automated production setup.

The other major advantage is volume. You don’t necessarily need one perfect Zuma. You can build a population and let the numbers do the work.

My verdict: Don’t judge Zuma by size. They’re one of those creatures that quietly makes your base run better while you’re busy doing more interesting things elsewhere.

B-Tier: Camilas

Camilas are among the stranger creatures on this list. Their ability to mimic other animals and even resemble Hennessy makes them stand out immediately, but their real value comes from the behavioral traits associated with that mimicry.

Capturing them isn’t always as straightforward as dealing with passive herbivores. You’ll need to pay more attention to movement patterns and use careful tracking and containment methods.

Genetically, however, they become much more interesting.

Their mimicry and camouflage traits can potentially be incorporated into resource-producing animals, creating specimens that are less obvious to predators and better suited to dangerous surroundings.

That’s a fairly niche application, but niche doesn’t mean useless. Once your operation grows, specialized traits start becoming more important.

My verdict: B-Tier feels right. I wouldn’t make Camilas the center of my entire breeding program, but I’d absolutely keep good specimens for later experiments.

B-Tier: Flux Beetle

The Unfashionable MVP of Base Maintenance

Let’s be honest: nobody starts playing Honeycomb dreaming about becoming the proud owner of a beetle-based waste management company.

But the Flux Beetle might change your mind.

In a small early base, that doesn’t sound particularly important. In a sprawling laboratory with multiple containment pens and production systems, it becomes a completely different story.

A colony of Flux Beetles can help automate sanitation and keep biological waste under control.

They’re fragile, though, and they need protected environments. Don’t throw them into an enclosure with something that thinks beetles are lunch.

My verdict: They’re not exciting, but they solve a problem that becomes increasingly annoying as your base grows. That’s enough for B-Tier in my book.

B-Tier: Woxes

Worth the Risk When You Start Exploring Toxic Regions

Woxes are where the tier list starts getting more dangerous.

These amphibious creatures live around wetlands and swamp environments and aren’t particularly happy about humans wandering into their territory. Get too close and you may have an entire defensive group responding to your presence.

So why bother?

The answer is their biological resilience. Woxes have strong resistance to the fungal infections, toxic spores, and environmental hazards associated with swamp regions. Their genetic material therefore becomes extremely useful if you’re planning to establish research operations in more hostile areas of Sota7.

Traits derived from Woxes can help create organisms better suited to dangerous environments and can support the production of specialized anti-toxin and filtration-related resources.

My verdict: They’re not a creature I’d recommend chasing early. Once hazardous biomes become part of your normal expedition route, though, their value jumps considerably.

C-Tier: Standard Valley Grazers

Perfect First Animals, Nothing More

Standard Valley Grazers are basically the tutorial animals of Sota7. They’re docile, easy to contain, and useful for basic organic resources.

And that’s fine.

Not every species needs to be a genetic superweapon.

They’re excellent for learning how scanning, extraction, containment, and basic breeding work. They also give new players an easy source of biomass and other starter materials.

The problem is that their genetic complexity doesn’t hold up particularly well once you start experimenting with advanced traits. Trying to push sophisticated elemental or environmental modifications into basic Valley Grazer genetics is generally a poor use of resources.

My verdict: Use them. Learn from them. Breed them if you need the resources. Then gradually replace them with more capable species.

D-Tier: Parasitic Swarmers

Just Leave Them Alone

Parasitic Swarmers are exactly the kind of wildlife encounter that makes you stop exploring and reconsider your life choices.

They travel in aggressive airborne groups, track thermal signatures, and can quickly become a serious threat to Hennessy’s suit and equipment. Worse, they don’t provide enough unique genetic value to justify actively hunting them for research purposes.

Their DNA is particularly problematic because attempting to incorporate it into healthy genetic samples can create more problems than benefits.

My verdict: Avoid their nesting areas. There are plenty of better targets for your scanner.

D-Tier: Corrosive Slime Slugs

Corrosive Slime Slugs are a perfect example of an animal that sounds useful until you actually imagine keeping it inside your laboratory.

I’d rather collect acidic resources from the wild than turn my own base into an experiment in structural corrosion.

My verdict: D-Tier. Interesting biology, terrible domestication candidate.

My Final Sota7 Ranking

If I had to condense the entire list into a practical progression, I’d put Scorchweaver at the top for advanced genetics, with Lucuma Camilla serving as the dependable backbone of a serious breeding program. Wild Green Zuma gets a very comfortable A-Tier position because of how easy it is to maintain and reproduce.

The B-Tier creatures are more situational. Camilas are valuable for behavioral experiments, Flux Beetles become increasingly useful in large bases, and Woxes are worth the effort when you’re preparing for hazardous regions.

Standard Valley Grazers belong in the early game, while Parasitic Swarmers and Corrosive Slime Slugs are creatures I’d rather encounter on my scanner than inside my laboratory.

Ultimately, the best animal in Honeycomb: The World Beyond isn’t always the one with the rarest DNA or the highest resource output. It’s the creature that fits what your base actually needs at that point in the game.

That’s what makes the Sota7 ecosystem interesting. You aren’t simply collecting animals. You’re building a living production network, one genetic experiment at a time.

If you’re still building your first serious bioengineering facility, prioritize stability and easy production. Once your infrastructure can support it, start hunting the rare environmental traits. That’s where the animal system really starts getting interesting.
