Gothic 1 Remake Map Location: How to Get the Map of the Colony Early
Few modern RPGs trust players the way Gothic 1 Remake does.
After spending my first several hours wandering through the Valley of Mines, I quickly realized that Alkimia Interactive wasn’t interested in holding my hand. There are no glowing trails leading to objectives, no giant icons floating over NPC heads, and no minimap constantly telling you where to go. Instead, you’re thrown into a brutal world where every wrong turn can put you face-to-face with creatures capable of ending your adventure in seconds.
That’s exactly why obtaining the Map of the Colony early became one of the smartest decisions I made during my playthrough.
If you’re new to Gothic or simply want to save yourself from unnecessary frustration, here’s everything you need to know about finding the map early, getting it for free, and making exploration significantly easier.
Why the Colony Map Is More Important Than You Think
Many players coming from modern RPGs underestimate just how dangerous exploration can be in Gothic 1 Remake.
The Valley of Mines isn’t designed around level scaling. The game doesn’t care whether you’re level one or level twenty. If you wander into a dangerous area too soon, the local wildlife will happily tear you apart.
Without a map, navigation becomes entirely dependent on:
- Following NPC directions
- Recognizing landmarks
- Remembering roads and pathways
- Trial and error exploration
While this old-school design creates immersion, it can also lead to hours of unnecessary backtracking.
The Colony Map immediately solves much of that problem by giving you a clear overview of the world and the locations of the major camps.
Where to Find Graham in the Old Camp
The first map vendor most players encounter is a cartographer named Graham.
Fortunately, he’s located in one of the easiest places to reach once you arrive at the Old Camp.
Finding Graham
Simply follow these steps:
- Enter the Old Camp through the main gate.
- Walk through the wooden entrance.
- Look immediately to your left.
- Find the small digger hut near the gate area.
- Locate Graham nearby.
During the daytime, he’s usually standing outside, sitting near his home, or hanging around one of the nearby gathering spots.
If you speak with him, you’ll gain access to his inventory, where he normally sells several maps, including the valuable Colony Map.
The Best Trick: Getting the Map for Free
This is where things get interesting.
During my first playthrough, I expected to spend precious Ore Nuggets on navigation. Early-game currency is incredibly valuable, and every piece of ore matters when you’re trying to upgrade weapons or buy better armor.
Fortunately, Gothic gives you another option.
Start Diego’s Early Quest
Before speaking seriously with Graham, talk to Diego and begin the quest involving the Old Mine.
During the conversation, Diego recommends obtaining a map before setting out.
This unlocks additional dialogue options with Graham.
Pressure Graham Into Handing It Over
When you return to the cartographer, mention that Diego sent you.
Graham will still try to charge you for the map initially.
Instead of paying:
- Continue discussing Diego’s request
- Refuse the normal purchase
- Select the more aggressive dialogue choices
- Insist the map should be provided for official camp business
Eventually, Graham caves in and hands over the map without requiring payment.
It’s one of those classic Gothic moments where confidence often works better than money.
What the Colony Map Actually Shows
Once you’ve obtained the map, navigation becomes dramatically easier.
Opening it reveals the overall layout of the Valley of Mines, including the locations of the major factions and important travel routes.
Key Benefits
| Feature | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| World Overview | Helps understand camp locations |
| Route Planning | Prevents accidental detours |
| Direction Indicator | Shows your current orientation |
| Manual Markers | Track important discoveries |
| Landmark Reference | Easier quest navigation |
| Exploration Support | Reduces unnecessary deaths |
The map doesn’t magically turn Gothic into a modern open-world game, but it provides enough information to make exploration enjoyable rather than frustrating.
Manual Markers Are Surprisingly Useful
One feature I wasn’t expecting to use so much was the marker system.
Unlike the original game, the remake gives players more flexibility when tracking discoveries.
I started marking:
- Locked treasure chests
- Strong monsters
- Rare herbs
- Valuable mining spots
- Unfinished quests
This became incredibly useful later in the game when I returned with stronger gear and better combat skills.
Instead of trying to remember every interesting location, I could simply check my markers and head back.
Alternative Map Seller: Dexter
If you somehow miss Graham or prefer another route, there’s a backup option inside the Old Camp.
A trader named Dexter also offers map-related goods.
You’ll find him deeper within the settlement near the marketplace area.
To reach him:
- Follow the main road through the camp.
- Head toward the inner castle section.
- Turn toward the market district.
- Look around the merchant stalls.
While I still recommend Graham as the fastest option, Dexter provides a useful fallback if circumstances change.
Understanding the Different Maps
One mistake many new players make is assuming there’s only one map in the game.
In reality, Gothic 1 Remake separates its navigation tools into several categories.
Colony Map
The primary world map.
Shows:
- Old Camp
- New Camp
- Swamp Camp
- Main roads
- Important landmarks
Old Camp Map
A more detailed layout focused specifically on the starting settlement.
Useful for locating:
- Traders
- Trainers
- Quest NPCs
- Camp facilities
New Camp Map
Obtained later during exploration of the western faction territory.
Provides detailed information about the New Camp’s unique layout.
Swamp Camp Map
Available through interactions with members of the Brotherhood.
Particularly useful because the swamp region can be surprisingly confusing to navigate.

Why Every New Player Should Prioritize This
After dozens of hours exploring Gothic 1 Remake, I genuinely believe obtaining the Colony Map should be one of the first goals for any new character.
The map won’t make combat easier.
It won’t increase your damage.
It won’t improve your armor.
But it will save an enormous amount of time.

More importantly, it helps you avoid wandering into dangerous zones before you’re prepared.
One of Gothic’s greatest strengths has always been its believable world design. The Valley of Mines feels like a real place rather than a theme park built around quest markers. The downside is that getting lost is incredibly easy, especially during the opening hours.
Securing the Colony Map early allows you to enjoy that immersive exploration while avoiding the frustration that often comes with it.
For me, it was probably the most valuable item I acquired during the entire first chapter. Not because it made my character stronger, but because it made every decision afterward smarter.
If you’re just beginning your journey through the Colony, visit Graham as soon as you reach the Old Camp. Your future self will thank you after avoiding several unnecessary encounters with creatures that are far stronger than anything a new prisoner should be fighting.
