DOOM The Dark Ages Revelations Gameplay Preview: Inside the New Chain Spear Combat and Metroidvania Campaign Mechanics
When I first watched the gameplay previews for DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations, my biggest concern was simple: would this just be another short DLC with a few extra levels and new enemies?
After digging through every gameplay presentation, developer interview, and preview event, I came away with the exact opposite impression.
Revelations doesn’t look like ordinary downloadable content. It feels more like id Software asked themselves one question:
“What if we combined the brutal weight of The Dark Ages with the speed and creativity that made DOOM Eternal unforgettable?”
From everything we’ve seen so far, that’s exactly what they’re doing.
More Than a Story Expansion
The original DOOM: The Dark Ages slowed the Slayer down compared to Eternal.
That wasn’t a bad thing. The combat became heavier, every swing mattered, shield timing was essential, and every encounter felt like a medieval battlefield instead of an aerial circus.
Revelations doesn’t abandon that philosophy.
Instead, it layers a brand-new movement system on top of it.
Rather than replacing the core gameplay, the expansion gives experienced players another tool that dramatically changes how every fight unfolds.
The result looks less like “more DOOM” and more like an evolution of the combat system.
Losing the Shield Changes Everything
One of my favorite ideas in the expansion is how the campaign begins.
Instead of giving players another overpowered weapon immediately, the story takes away one of the Slayer’s most important tools.
The famous Shield Saw is destroyed early in the adventure, forcing players to rely on something completely unfamiliar—the Chain Spear.
It’s a clever design decision.
Many games introduce new mechanics without giving players a reason to actually learn them.
Here, you don’t have a choice.
You’re thrown into combat with an entirely different approach, and mastering the spear becomes part of the narrative itself.
That instantly makes the DLC feel fresh.
The Chain Spear Might Become My Favorite DOOM Weapon
The Chain Spear isn’t simply another weapon.
It’s closer to a complete combat system.
Instead of serving one purpose, it constantly changes roles depending on the situation.
Some of its most useful abilities include:
- Powerful melee stabs that quickly eliminate close-range threats.
- Ground Slam attacks capable of staggering groups of demons.
- Long-range spear throws for precision hits against distant enemies.
- Quick slashes that can parry incoming attacks and break armor.
That’s already a versatile toolkit.
Then the movement mechanics enter the picture.
Movement Finally Feels Wild Again
If there’s one thing I missed from DOOM Eternal, it was momentum.
Flying across arenas, constantly repositioning, and turning combat into controlled chaos made every encounter exciting.
The Dark Ages intentionally slowed everything down.
Revelations seems determined to bring that speed back—but in its own way.
The Chain Spear doubles as a grappling device, allowing the Slayer to launch himself toward enemies without depending on a specific firearm.
That alone creates dozens of new possibilities.
- Hook into a demon while firing your Plasma weapon.
- Launch toward a heavy enemy while unloading rockets.
- Combine every primary weapon with the Chain Spear’s mobility.
The spear works independently from your primary weapon, which means every gun instantly gains new movement options.
I honestly think this is one of the smartest combat additions id Software has made in years.
Orbit Might Become the DLC’s Signature Mechanic
One feature that immediately stood out during previews is something developers call the Orbit maneuver.
Instead of flying directly toward an enemy after grappling, players can swing around them in mid-air.
Imagine circling a gigantic demon while continuously firing from above.
It almost looks like aerial dogfighting.
This mechanic adds another layer of positioning that previous DOOM games simply didn’t have.
Rather than thinking only about distance, you’ll also be thinking about angles, momentum, and aerial movement.
That sounds incredibly satisfying once mastered.
Exploration Finally Gets More Attention
One surprise I didn’t expect was how much exploration appears to matter.
Modern DOOM campaigns have always hidden collectibles, but levels mostly pushed players forward.
Revelations seems to take inspiration from Metroidvania design.
Instead of purely linear progression, areas connect through larger hubs packed with hidden paths, optional puzzles, vertical traversal, and secret upgrades.
The most interesting part?
Many locations can’t even be reached during your first visit.
As the Chain Spear gains additional abilities, players can revisit previous zones to discover new rewards.
That gives exploration an actual purpose beyond simply finding collectibles.
For players who enjoy fully completing games, this is a welcome change.
Campaign Structure at a Glance
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Campaign Length | Around 10–12 hours |
| Main Missions | Five major story chapters |
| Central Area | Large interconnected Purgatory hub |
| Exploration | Metroidvania-inspired progression |
| Character Growth | Dedicated Chain Spear upgrade tree |
| Replay Value | Hidden paths, secrets, optional upgrades |
Compared to previous DOOM expansions, that’s a surprisingly substantial amount of content.
Endgame Looks Surprisingly Ambitious
Most single-player shooters end once the credits roll.
Revelations appears to be taking a different approach.
A significant portion of the expansion is focused on post-campaign challenges.
Players can expect activities such as:
- Hunting mysterious shards across every map.
- Unlocking an extremely difficult hidden boss.
- Completing advanced Slayer Trials.
- Conquering brutal Master Arenas.
- Chasing leaderboard scores.
- Revisiting levels with new traversal abilities.
For players who love optimizing combat, this could easily become the biggest reason to keep playing long after finishing the story.
The Shield Isn’t Gone Forever
When the Chain Spear was first revealed, many players assumed the Shield Saw would become obsolete.
Thankfully, that’s not the case.
High-level gameplay actually encourages switching between both tools constantly.
This creates far more interesting combat decisions.
A typical encounter might involve:
- Grappling toward an elite demon.
- Orbiting around it while firing.
- Switching to the Shield Saw mid-air.
- Throwing the shield to break enemy defenses.
- Landing with a devastating slam attack.
- Immediately swapping back to the spear for another aerial assault.
Watching experienced players chain these mechanics together almost resembles a fast-paced action game rather than a traditional shooter.
That’s exactly the kind of depth I hoped this expansion would deliver.
Ripatorium 3.0 Is a Great Bonus
Even outside the campaign, id Software isn’t finished.
The updated Ripatorium mode introduces more customization than ever before.
Players can tweak enemy waves, create their own combat scenarios, save preferred configurations, and experiment with different weapon combinations.
It’s basically a training ground for mastering advanced mechanics.
Considering how much freedom the Chain Spear introduces, having a dedicated sandbox makes perfect sense.
I can already imagine players spending dozens of hours refining their strategies there.

My Biggest Takeaway
What impresses me most isn’t the new weapon.
It’s the confidence behind the design.
Many expansions play things safe.
Revelations seems willing to reshape almost every aspect of combat.
- Movement is faster.
- Exploration is deeper.
- Levels are less linear.
- Build progression matters more.
- Replayability has clearly become a major focus.
Most importantly, the developers aren’t trying to recreate DOOM Eternal or simply repeat The Dark Ages.
Instead, they appear to be combining the strongest ideas from both games into something entirely new.
That’s a much harder goal—and a far more exciting one.
Final Verdict
Based on everything shown so far, DOOM: The Dark Ages – Revelations looks like one of the most ambitious expansions id Software has ever produced.
The Chain Spear has the potential to completely redefine combat, giving players greater freedom without sacrificing the heavier identity established by the base game. The addition of larger interconnected environments, meaningful progression, challenging endgame content, and advanced movement mechanics makes this feel much closer to a full campaign than a typical DLC.
Of course, previews only tell part of the story, and the real test will come once players get their hands on the expansion. Even so, it’s difficult not to be excited by what has been shown. Everything points toward an experience that rewards skill, experimentation, and aggressive play in classic DOOM fashion.
If id Software delivers on even most of these ideas, Revelations could easily become the definitive way to experience DOOM: The Dark Ages—an expansion that doesn’t simply add content but fundamentally elevates the entire game.
