Intel Arc A770 16GB Performance Guide: Can You Play 1666: Amsterdam?

If you are still gaming on an Intel Arc A770 16GB, you probably know the feeling: every time a new demanding PC game comes out, there is a moment of doubt. Is this finally the game that makes my GPU too old?

I had exactly that thought with 1666: Amsterdam.

Panache Digital Games’ dark fantasy action-adventure is not exactly a lightweight title. It leans heavily into modern rendering technology, Unreal Engine 5 features, dynamic lighting, atmospheric effects, and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. On paper, that sounds like a pretty uncomfortable combination for a first-generation Intel Arc card.

But after looking at where the A770 sits against the game’s requirements, I came away more optimistic than I expected.

The Arc A770 16GB can absolutely run 1666: Amsterdam, and in the right configuration, it can deliver a surprisingly enjoyable experience. It is not going to compete with an RTX 3080 Ti or other high-end GPUs, but that was never really the point of this card.

For players who already own an A770, I would not rush out to upgrade just for this game.

The first thing worth pointing out is that the official minimum Intel GPU is actually the Arc A580, not the A770.

That is important because the A770 sits comfortably above Intel’s entry-level requirement for the game. The A770 also brings something that becomes increasingly useful in modern games: 16GB of VRAM.

That gives the A770 a pretty comfortable position.

It is well above the minimum Intel GPU, although I would still avoid treating it as a true recommended-spec card. The recommended GPU class is considerably faster, particularly when ray tracing is involved.

In other words, the A770 belongs in that interesting middle ground: better than minimum, below high-end, but perfectly usable with smart settings.

Why the Arc A770 Actually Makes Sense Here

One thing I have always found interesting about Intel Arc is that its reputation depends heavily on the game.

Older DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 games can still expose some of the architecture’s historical weaknesses. Modern DirectX 12 games are a different story.

And 1666: Amsterdam is exactly the kind of game where the A770 makes more sense.

The game is built around DirectX 12, which gives Intel’s Xe-HPG architecture a much cleaner environment to work in. The old driver overhead problems that hurt Arc during its early years aren’t nearly as concerning here.

That doesn’t magically turn the A770 into a high-end GPU, but it does mean the card gets to play to its strengths.

16GB of VRAM Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

The A770’s 16GB GDDR6 memory is probably the feature I appreciate most in 2026.

Modern games are becoming increasingly hungry for VRAM, especially when high-quality textures, ray tracing and complex environments are involved. Even when average FPS looks acceptable, running out of VRAM can create the kind of stuttering that makes a game feel terrible.

That is where the A770 can punch above its class.

You can push texture quality relatively high without constantly worrying about the game running into a hard memory wall. I would still avoid blindly maxing every setting, but Ultra textures are reasonable on this card if the rest of the configuration is sensible.

For a game built around a detailed historical Amsterdam filled with dense environments, shadows and atmospheric effects, that extra memory is genuinely useful.

Ray Tracing Is the Real Problem

If there is one area where the A770 has to work hard, it is ray tracing.

1666: Amsterdam requires hardware-accelerated ray tracing, so this isn’t a feature you can simply turn off and forget about. The A770 does have dedicated Xe ray-tracing hardware, which is obviously much better than trying to brute-force RT through traditional shader resources.

Still, the A770 is not a ray-tracing monster.

This is why I would keep Ray Tracing or Global Illumination around Medium rather than trying to run everything at maximum.

The difference between High and Medium RT settings can be much more noticeable to your frame rate than it is to your eyes. In a game with fog, darkness, supernatural effects and constantly changing lighting, maintaining consistent frame pacing is more valuable than having the highest possible RT preset.

What Kind of FPS Can You Expect?

This is where things get interesting.

At native 1080p on High settings, the A770 can sit roughly in the 48–58 FPS range, depending heavily on what is happening on screen.

During ordinary exploration, performance should feel reasonably stable. The more demanding sequences are another matter.

Nighttime encounters, volumetric fog, supernatural effects and ray-traced lighting can push the GPU considerably harder. Those moments can pull performance into the low 40s.

Personally, I would consider that playable, but not ideal.

For a third-person action game, I would much rather have a stable 60-ish FPS than a beautiful screenshot at 45 FPS.

What About 1440p?

Native 1440p is where I would stop pretending the A770 is a high-end GPU.

At Medium settings, performance can land around 33–40 FPS. You can certainly play like this if you are more interested in the atmosphere and story than responsiveness, but combat becomes noticeably less comfortable.

For me, native 1440p isn’t the sweet spot.

The much better solution is XeSS.

XeSS Is the A770’s Secret Weapon

If you own an Intel Arc GPU and you’re ignoring XeSS, you’re leaving performance on the table.

The A770 includes XMX hardware, giving it an advantage when running Intel’s AI-based XeSS upscaling technology. In a demanding game like 1666: Amsterdam, this can make a much bigger difference than dropping every graphical setting to Low.

At 1080p, I would start with XeSS Quality.

That can push performance into roughly the 65–75 FPS range, depending on the scene. More importantly, the image can remain surprisingly clean. You still get the detailed cobblestone streets, brick buildings and atmospheric lighting without the obvious softness associated with aggressive upscaling.

For 1440p, XeSS Balanced makes more sense.

With a combination of Medium and High graphical settings, the A770 can target roughly 55–62 FPS, which is a much more comfortable experience than native 1440p.

And honestly, this is probably how I would play the game.

My Recommended Intel Arc A770 Settings

If I were sitting down to play 1666: Amsterdam on an A770 16GB, I would start here:

  • Resolution: 1920×1080 or 2560×1440
  • Upscaling: Intel XeSS
  • XeSS: Quality at 1080p / Balanced at 1440p
  • Texture Quality: Ultra
  • Shadow Quality: Medium
  • Ray Tracing / Global Illumination: Medium
  • Reflections: Medium
  • Volumetric Effects: Medium
  • Ambient Occlusion: High
  • Motion Blur: Off
  • V-Sync: Off if using VRR

The philosophy here is simple: keep the settings that make the game look good and reduce the ones that quietly destroy performance.

Textures are a good example. With 16GB of VRAM, there is little reason to aggressively lower them. Shadows, volumetrics and ray-traced effects are much better targets when you need additional FPS.

Do Not Forget Resizable BAR

There is one thing every Arc A770 owner should check before blaming the GPU.

Resizable BAR needs to be enabled.

Intel Arc cards rely heavily on proper memory access behavior, and ReBAR is an important part of getting the expected performance from the architecture. If it is disabled, performance can suffer significantly, and inconsistent frame times can become a much bigger problem.

Before launching the game, check your motherboard BIOS and make sure Resizable BAR is enabled. It is also worth confirming that your motherboard, CPU and BIOS configuration support it correctly.

This is one of those five-minute checks that can save you hours of wondering why benchmark results look dramatically better than your own PC.

Is the Arc A770 16GB Worth Using for 1666: Amsterdam?

Yes. Absolutely.

Would I recommend buying an Arc A770 specifically for this game in 2026? Probably not. There are newer graphics cards available, and the A770 is an older generation product.

But if you already own one, that’s a completely different question.

The A770 still has a very useful combination of features:

  • 16GB VRAM
  • Strong DirectX 12 performance
  • Dedicated ray-tracing hardware
  • Excellent XeSS support
  • Enough memory for high-quality textures
  • Good performance at 1080p with upscaling

Its biggest weakness is raw GPU performance. You cannot expect it to behave like an RTX 3080 Ti-class card, especially when ray tracing becomes heavy.

But that’s okay.

I actually think the A770 is one of those GPUs that makes more sense when you stop trying to make it run everything at Ultra. Give it a sensible configuration, use XeSS, keep the expensive effects under control, and it can still deliver a very enjoyable modern PC gaming experience.

Final Verdict

1666: Amsterdam does not kill the Intel Arc A770.

Quite the opposite: the game demonstrates why having 16GB of VRAM and a GPU designed around modern APIs can still be valuable years after launch.

My preferred setup would be 1440p with XeSS Balanced, Medium/High settings, Medium ray tracing and Medium volumetrics, aiming for roughly 60 FPS. If you care more about responsiveness, 1080p with XeSS Quality is the safer option and can produce a noticeably smoother experience.

Is it perfect? No.

The A770 still struggles when the game throws every expensive visual effect at it simultaneously. But for an older mid-range GPU, seeing it remain capable of handling a demanding Unreal Engine 5 title in 2026 is pretty impressive.

And personally, that’s what I like about this card.

The Arc A770 isn’t the GPU you buy to chase benchmark charts. It’s the GPU you keep around when you want to see just how far a surprisingly capable piece of hardware can be pushed.

For 1666: Amsterdam, it still has plenty of life left.
