Witcher 3 Bear School Gear Guide: All Locations, Upgrades, and Best Next-Gen Builds

There is something deeply satisfying about playing Geralt as a walking fortress.

The Witcher 3 gives you plenty of ways to build your character, but the Ursine Gear, better known as the Bear School Gear, has always had a particular appeal to me. It is not the fastest build. It is not the most elegant. And it certainly does not encourage you to dance around every enemy like a Feline School specialist.

Instead, you take the hit.

You survive it.

Then you hit back hard enough that whatever was standing in front of Geralt probably regrets starting the fight.

The next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt makes the Ursine playstyle even more interesting, particularly for players tackling Death March difficulty. Heavy armor, adrenaline generation, Quen synergy and strong attacks all come together to create one of the most forgiving endgame setups available.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Bear School Gear

The biggest strength of Ursine armor is obvious: survivability.

Geralt becomes much harder to kill, especially against enemies that rely on physical attacks. Bandits, monsters and bosses that can erase a lighter build in a couple of mistakes suddenly become manageable.

But the armor is doing more than simply increasing your defense.

The Bear School setup naturally works with Adrenaline Points and Quen, which creates a very comfortable combat loop. You absorb pressure, maintain your defenses, build adrenaline and then use heavy attacks or signs to punish openings.

That combination is one of the main reasons I prefer completing the full set rather than mixing Ursine armor with random pieces from other Witcher schools.

It feels like an actual build rather than simply wearing the strongest armor you happen to find.

Basic Ursine Gear Locations

The first Bear School diagrams send you to Skellige, which is fitting considering how brutal and isolated the islands feel.

The recommended level is around 20, although you can obviously start hunting the diagrams earlier if you’re comfortable dealing with stronger enemies.

You can purchase Ibrahim Savi’s First Map from the armorer at Kaer Trolde to begin tracking the set. Finding one of the diagrams can also activate the scavenger hunt.

Basic Armor, Gauntlets, Trousers and Boots

The four main armor pieces are located at Castle Tuirseach on An Skellig.

Travel to Urialla Harbor and make your way toward Yngvar’s Fang. Inside the ruined castle, you’ll need to descend into the underground section and operate a wall lever to access the prison area.

Expect Wraiths along the way.

Eventually, you’ll reach the throne room. Search the northeastern section for a chest containing the Armor, Gauntlets, Trousers and Boots diagrams.

Basic Steel Sword

The steel sword is found at the Ruined Inn on the southern coast of Ard Skellig.

The area contains Wraiths, and the route to the diagram requires clearing rubble from a cellar entrance with Aard. Search the room below the inn for the chest.

Basic Silver Sword

For the silver sword, head toward Fort Etnir, north of Rogne.

Two Gargoyles and an Ice Elemental can make this location unpleasant at lower levels, so don’t feel obligated to fight everything if you’re only there for the blueprint. The diagram is hidden on the eastern side of the ruins.

Basic Crossbow

The Ursine Crossbow is located inside a coastal cave on Spikeroog, southwest of the Old Watchtower signpost.

You’ll encounter Drowners and Sirens around the area. The chest is positioned on a rocky ledge beside a damaged wooden boat.

One important detail: the Ursine Crossbow does not progress through the normal upgrade tiers.

Enhanced Ursine Gear Locations

Once you’re ready for the next step, purchase Ibrahim Savi’s Second Map.

The Enhanced diagrams are spread around Skellige, so this part of the hunt becomes a little more adventurous.

The Enhanced Armor is hidden inside the Grotto, in the deeper part of the cave system. The trousers require a little underwater exploration, while the boots are found in a cave occupied by three particularly memorable rock trolls.

And yes, the trolls are exactly as annoying as you probably remember.

The Enhanced Steel Sword is on Kaer Almhult, the old prison island west of Eldberg Lighthouse. You’ll have to push through pirates and other enemies before reaching the chest.

The Enhanced Silver Sword is considerably easier to miss. Look for the cave northwest of Kaer Muire and check around the rocky formation near the entrance.

Superior Ursine Gear

At around level 30, the Bear School progression moves to Velen.

Purchase Ibrahim Savi’s Third Map to reveal the relevant locations.

The four Superior armor pieces are conveniently grouped together inside a cave in eastern Velen. Foglets occupy the area, so Cat is useful for visibility while exploring the darker tunnels.

Follow the cave system and look for the Bear School markings. The armor diagrams are stored together in a large chest.

The Superior swords are separate.

The Superior Ursine Steel Sword is located at the Ruined Watchtower in southwestern Velen, while the Superior Silver Sword can be found inside a cave southwest of the Orphanage in Crookback Bog.

These locations aren’t particularly glamorous. That’s part of the fun. You are essentially crawling through forgotten ruins and monster-infested caves looking for scraps of Witcher equipment.

It feels appropriate.

Mastercrafted Ursine Gear

The final base-game upgrade requires roughly level 34.

This time, you’ll need Ibrahim Savi’s Fourth Map, along with access to the Master Armorer and Master Blacksmith.

For the armor set, travel to the Destroyed Bastion in southern Velen. A Cyclops guards the ruins, but once you’ve dealt with it, the four armor diagrams can be found together near the ruined interior.

The Mastercrafted swords are separated from the armor.

The Mastercrafted Steel Sword is hidden inside a cave near Blackbough, where Nekkers are waiting.

The Mastercrafted Silver Sword is located in a small cave northeast of Olena’s Grove. A Bear protects the area, although the actual chest is easy enough to find once the creature is dealt with.

Personally, this is the point where the Ursine set starts to feel properly complete. The early versions are useful, but the Mastercrafted equipment is where the heavy-armor identity really starts paying off.

Grandmaster Ursine Gear in Blood and Wine

If you own Blood and Wine, the journey doesn’t stop at Mastercrafted.

The Grandmaster Ursine Gear is the ultimate Bear School upgrade, and it is one of the first things I’d recommend hunting once you’re properly established in Toussaint.

The suggested level is around 40.

Head to Beauclair and find Lazare Lafargue, the Grandmaster Smith. Speaking with him unlocks the Grandmaster Ursine scavenger hunt.

The first group of diagrams includes:

• Grandmaster Ursine Armor
• Grandmaster Ursine Gauntlets
• Grandmaster Ursine Silver Sword

These are located in Flovive. Search for the damaged, partially buried stone building and clear the blocked entrance with a charged Aard. Inside, the chest contains the three diagrams.

The remaining pieces are deeper in the Tufo Owl Eye Grottos:

• Grandmaster Ursine Trousers
• Grandmaster Ursine Steel Sword
• Grandmaster Ursine Boots

The cave system is crawling with Giant Centipedes. Yrden is particularly useful here, while Golden Oriole helps deal with poison.

Eventually you’ll discover the remains of Junod of Belhaven. His corpse holds the final three diagrams.

What You Need to Craft the Grandmaster Set

Grandmaster equipment isn’t cheap.

You will need the previous Mastercrafted Ursine pieces, along with several expensive crafting components.

Some of the important materials include:

• Infused Slyzard Hide
• Enriched Dimeritium Plates
• Enriched Dimeritium Ore
• Monster Essence
• Monster Heart
• Cured Leather
• Infused Crystal Dust
• Acid Extract

The dimeritium components are usually where the crafting bill starts becoming painful.

Don’t sell every rare crafting material you find just because the merchant offers a tempting amount of crowns. If you’re planning to complete the Grandmaster Ursine set, keeping valuable monster parts and metal components can save you a lot of backtracking later.

My Recommended Next-Gen Ursine Build

The armor itself is only half of the equation.

For a Death March Ursine build, I would lean heavily into strong attacks, Quen, adrenaline and defensive bonuses.

Core Skills

Bear School Techniques is practically mandatory for this style. Heavy armor becomes considerably more attractive when your build is actively rewarding you for wearing it.

I’d also consider:

• Muscle Memory for stronger fast attacks.
• Strength Training for improved heavy attack damage.
• Razor Focus for an immediate Adrenaline Point when combat begins.
• Exploding Shield for additional Quen utility.
• Quen Discharge for punishing enemies that break your shield.
• Acquired Tolerance and Heightened Tolerance if you’re building around multiple decoctions.

The exact skill distribution can change depending on whether you’re playing a pure tank, an aggressive heavy-attacker or a hybrid Quen build. That’s one of the nice things about Ursine equipment: it doesn’t force you into one exact combat rotation.

Euphoria or a More Defensive Mutation?

For a damage-focused endgame setup, Euphoria remains extremely attractive.

Its Toxicity-based bonuses can turn a decoction-heavy build into a serious damage machine. Combining several useful decoctions with strong Ursine armor gives you both offensive scaling and considerable survivability.

That said, I wouldn’t treat Euphoria as the only possible answer.

If your priority is maximum Quen interaction or a more defensive playstyle, experimenting with alternative mutations can be more enjoyable than blindly copying an optimized setup.

That’s the thing with The Witcher 3: the numbers matter, but the combat system is flexible enough that a slightly less optimized build can still feel fantastic.

Runewords and Glyphs

One of the most interesting options for Ursine armor is the Levity runeword from the Hearts of Stone expansion.

Levity effectively changes how the armor is treated for certain skill interactions, allowing you to retain the defensive identity of the set while improving stamina-related behavior.

If you’re constantly annoyed by the slower stamina regeneration of heavy armor, this is absolutely worth experimenting with.

For a Quen-focused setup, Greater Glyphs of Quen are another straightforward choice. They reinforce the defensive core of the build and fit naturally with the set’s emphasis on shield management.

Is Ursine Gear Worth Using on Death March?

For me, this is where Bear School really earns its reputation.

The Ursine set isn’t about deleting enemies before they have a chance to react. It’s about giving Geralt room to make mistakes.

And on Death March, that matters.

A missed dodge doesn’t automatically mean death. A poorly timed attack doesn’t necessarily end the encounter. Quen gives you another layer of protection, heavy armor absorbs punishment and adrenaline provides another resource to build around.

The result is a playstyle that feels deliberate rather than frantic.

If you’re starting a new Witcher 3 run and already know you enjoy heavy attacks, defensive mechanics and Quen, I’d start collecting Ursine diagrams as soon as your level allows. The complete progression from basic gear through Grandmaster equipment also gives the playthrough a nice sense of purpose.

You aren’t simply collecting armor.

You’re building Geralt into the Bear School Witcher he was always meant to become.

And honestly, there are few things more satisfying than walking into a dangerous Death March encounter, watching the enemy hit that huge Ursine health bar, seeing Quen absorb the punishment, and then answering with one enormous heavy attack.

That is Bear School at its best.
